Breast Augmentation (Implants)

Some women with small or asymmetrical breasts may choose to undergo breast augmentation. The surgery consists of lifting the breast tissue and placing a specially designed, saline-filled  or silicone implant beneath breast tissue or the chest wall muscle.

Incisions for the implants can be made in the crease along the lower part of the breast, along the lower half of the skin around the areola, or in the armpit.  After the incision is made, the implant is inserted and then adjusted to the ideal size and symmetry before the incision is closed.

Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia, and the recovery time varies according to the placement (submuscular or subglandular) of the implants and the amount of breast tissue the patient has prior to the procedure.  Most patients tolerate the procedure with only moderate discomfort for a few days. 

The results of breast augmentation are usually very rewarding for the patient.
